Overview: Developed by the Trainee Organizing Committee for CSPT 2024 this series of workshops and lectures addresses key knowledge gaps for trainees and early career researchers. Open to all meeting registrants the sessions will run in advance and throughout the 2024 CSPT Scientific Meeting.
Navigating the academic recruitment process
This is a webinar that will be held in advance of the CSPT Scientific Meeting via Zoom. The session will consist of two presentations from CSPT faculty. Faculty lead Thomas Velenosi (UBC) will provide an overview of the academic recruitment process from the perspective of an applicant while Dylan Burger (uOttawa) will discuss the perspective of the institution. The presentations will be followed by an “Ask me anything” session where attendees will be able to gain feedback on their pressing questions.
The session is open to everyone (including those not attending the CSPT meeting).

Grant writing workshop with mock grant review
This workshop will consist of two parts. First a brief presentation on the keys to successful grant applications. Afterwards trainees will have the opportunity to actively participate in a CIHR-style face-to-face peer review meeting. The material for peer review will be sample proposals provided in advance of the meeting. Faculty leads Dylan Burger (uOttawa), Bradley Urquhart (Western), and Amit Bhavsar (uAlberta) will guide discussion and provide key insights into the intricacies of peer review and strategies for common challenges.
This session is open to all attendees of the CSPT Scientific meeting. Registration is limited to 16 participants and will be on a first come, first served basis.

Clinical pharmacology case studies
An annual tradition at the CSPT Scientific meeting. Faculty lead Bruce Carleton (UBC) will present 3-4 interesting and challenging cases in clinical pharmacology. The session will provide an opportunity to review evidence and discuss best care practices.

Building a teaching portfolio
This session will address what is frequently a gap in graduate training: how to develop teaching skills and establish an effective teaching portfolio. Faculty leads John Leddy (uOttawa), Fabiana Caetano Crowley (Western), and Fatima Mraiche (uAlberta) will discuss types of teaching opportunities available, the desirable skills for a teaching intensity position and how to gain them, and what approaches and experiences are valued by search committees.

This session will highlight various careers in the federal government that harness skills gained from research training.
