Dr. Karwi is an Assistant Professor of BioMedical Sciences in the Division of BioMedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN). His research program focuses on understanding the root causes of mitochondrial insulin resistance and its impact on metabolic perturbations in age-associated diseases, including heart failure, obesity and diabetes. Dr. Karwi’s research has resulted in >38 publications, and he has been the recipient of a number of prestigious and competitive awards, such as the Alberta Innovates Postdoctoral Fellowship in Health Innovation, the Canadain Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics 2020 Postdoctoral Award, the American Heart Association Paul Dudley White International Scholar Award, the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences Roberto Bolli Young Investigator Award, International Centre of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) Fellowship. Dr. Karwi is a member of the Early Career Investigators Committee of the International Society of Heart Research-North American Section (ISHR-NAS), the American Heart Association, and the Canadian Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

Dr. Van Lu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology & Pharmacology at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Lu received her PhD from the University of Alberta studying the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in inducing chronic pain signaling mechanisms in the spinal cord. She continued her training with postdoctoral research positions in the USA and UK studying G-protein signaling mechanisms in neurons and enteroendocrine cells. Dr. Lu’s research focuses on the chemosensory signaling pathways in gut epithelial cells and developing novel intestinal models to investigate mechanisms underlying gastrointestinal diseases and gut-brain-microbiota interactions.
